WebJun 1, 2002 · 1. Introduction. Highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) has been studied extensively by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A clean sample is indeed easily prepared by cleavage and remains stable for a long time under ambient conditions. Being polycrystalline in nature, HOPG is composed of misoriented grains of micrometer size.
